How to Wash Silk Pajamas and Precautions for Washing Silk Pajamas

I. How to Wash Silk Pajamas

Silk pajamas, being lighter and more delicate than regular pajamas, require special care when washing. Here’s a detailed guide on how to wash silk pajamas:

  • Washing: Silk pajamas are made from protein-based delicate health fibers. They should not be rubbed or washed in a washing machine. Instead, soak the pajamas in cold water for 5 to 10 minutes, then use a specialized silk detergent, low-sudsing detergent, or neutral soap to gently rub and wash. (Shampoo can also be used.) Rinse thoroughly in clear water.
  • Drying: Air-dry the pajamas in a cool, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight and do not use a dryer, as UV rays can cause silk fabrics to yellow, fade, and degrade.
  • Ironing: Silk pajamas have slightly poorer wrinkle resistance than synthetic fibers. Therefore, iron the pajamas when they are 70% dry after air-drying. First, spray them evenly with clear water and wait for 3 to 5 minutes before ironing. Keep the ironing temperature below 150°C. Avoid direct contact between the iron and the fabric to prevent shine marks.
  • Storage: For thin pajamas, clean and iron them thoroughly before storing. Ironing also helps prevent mold and pests. Keep the storage boxes or cabinets clean and sealed to prevent dust contamination.

II. Precautions for Washing Silk Pajamas

Here are some precautions for washing and maintaining silk pajamas:

  1. Silk’s surface is not prone to stains, so use cold water or warm water below 30°C with a mild detergent or neutral cleaner. Gently rub by hand and use fabric softener for added softness.
  2. If using a washing machine, place the pajamas in a laundry bag and select the delicate cycle.
  3. Avoid using bleach or alkaline detergents, excessive rubbing, or twisting.
  4. Do not expose silk to direct sunlight or high-temperature drying. Oil-based stains can be treated with dishwashing liquid, which is neutral and won’t damage the fabric.
  5. Silk requires careful handling during washing and maintenance to avoid damage.
  6. If the silk has slightly yellowed, add 3 to 4 milliliters of vinegar to the wash, soak for 5 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.
  7. After washing, hang the pajamas to dry naturally in a cool, shaded area. If ironing is needed, use low heat and place a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  8. Wash silk pajamas with neutral detergent and avoid twisting or drying in the sun. Hang them to dry naturally.
  9. Adding a small teaspoon of vinegar to the wash can enhance the color and brightness of the fabric.
  10. Iron the pajamas when they are 80% dry for the best wrinkle removal. Iron the reverse side to maintain shine and avoid water marks.
  11. Keep silk pajamas away from fire and mothballs to prevent brittleness.
