Does Silk Shrink? How to Prevent and Fix Silk Shrinkage

One of the most common fears about washing silk is shrinkage. Does silk actually shrink? The answer is yes — but only under certain conditions. Understanding what causes silk to shrink and how to prevent it will help you care for your silk with confidence.

Does Silk Shrink?

Yes, silk can shrink — but it doesn't have to. Silk shrinkage is almost always caused by exposure to heat or improper washing. When silk fibers are exposed to hot water, high dryer temperatures, or harsh agitation, the protein fibers contract and the fabric shrinks. The good news is that shrinkage is almost entirely preventable with proper care.

What Causes Silk to Shrink?

  • Hot water: The most common cause of silk shrinkage. Always use cool or lukewarm water (below 86°F / 30°C).
  • Tumble drying: Even on a low setting, dryer heat can cause significant shrinkage. Always air dry silk.
  • Harsh agitation: Vigorous machine washing can cause silk to felt and shrink. Always use a gentle or delicate cycle.
  • Ironing on high heat: Direct high heat from an iron can cause localized shrinkage and damage.

How Much Does Silk Shrink?

If exposed to heat, silk can shrink by 5–10% or more. Higher-quality, heavier momme silk (like 22mm) tends to be more stable than lighter weights, but all silk can shrink if exposed to heat.

How to Prevent Silk Shrinkage

  • Always wash in cool or cold water
  • Use a gentle hand wash or delicate machine cycle
  • Never put silk in the dryer
  • Air dry flat or on a padded hanger away from heat sources
  • Iron on the lowest heat setting with a pressing cloth, or use a steamer

Can You Unshrink Silk?

Sometimes — if caught early. Here's how to try to restore shrunken silk:

  1. Fill a basin with cool water and add 1–2 tablespoons of hair conditioner or baby shampoo. These help relax the protein fibers.
  2. Submerge the shrunken silk item and gently work the conditioner through the fabric. Let it soak for 30 minutes.
  3. Gently remove and press out excess water without wringing.
  4. Lay flat on a clean towel and very gently stretch the fabric back toward its original dimensions while it's still damp. Work slowly and evenly.
  5. Pin the edges to a flat surface to hold the shape while drying.
  6. Allow to air dry completely.

This method works best on mild shrinkage. Severely shrunken silk may not fully recover, which is why prevention is so important.

The Bottom Line

Silk shrinkage is almost always preventable. Use cool water, gentle washing, and always air dry — and your silk will maintain its size and shape wash after wash.
